		<description>User Guide 📖

Hello, my name is Juliana Bigelow. Welcome to my portfolio.

Click on the desktop icons to engage with my work. Throughout my time in university, I pushed myself to try any form of content creation I felt drawn to. Each folder represents a different area.
If navigating the desktop is challenging, the menu button located at the top right can be used to access the content accessibly. If you need to return to the desktop, click on the “JB✨” on the left corner of the top bar. This site currently functions better for desktop users. A more responsive mobile update is on the way soon 😉.

Anything that is linked to an external source within my content is italicized and is colored dark blue.

I have also included some personal touches. Explore the icons on the right side of the desktop or my Hobbies and Extras page to learn more about what brings me joy and my favorite media.

 Happy exploring!

 (p.s. drag the desktop icons around to customize your experience!)

	About Me 👩‍💻

Juliana Bigelow, is forging a path for herself as a woman in audio and media. In June 2021 she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Portland State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Sonic Arts and Music Production. In addition to her studies, she has worked in digital marketing, journalism, and audio editing. Two things fuel her:

 1) Her insurmountable passion for providing artists and content creators with the tools and compensation they need to be successful, as technology continues to drive the industry in ways that often shortcut creatives; and

 2) Her belief that live music, everyday sounds, and stories have the unique power to unite people, even if only for a moment.
 She is an alumnus of the 2020 She Is The Music virtual mentorship program, and received the 2021 Student Employee of the Year Award for her role as Portland State’s Student Media Marketing Manager.&#38;nbsp;

In her free time, you can find her learning how to skateboard, playing her Telecaster, studying Norwegian, or at one of her local music venues catching a show.

You can contact her through her Instagram @julianabigelow or email her at julianabigelowbusiness@gmail.com.

	Digital Marketing 📈In June 2021 I was honored as Portland State’s Student Activities and Leadership Programs’ (SALP) Student Employee of the Year for my role as the Student Media Marketing Manager. More information about the award can be found on the 2021 SALPies website.&#38;nbsp;

Party In The ParkParty In The Park (PIP) is an annual event held by the Portland State’s Student Activities and Leadership Services. The event typically serves thousands of attendees, but 2020 called for adaptations. My team and I stepped forward to craft a digital website open for one month, which allowed students to explore opportunities to get involved in campus life.

I coordinated the creation of assets, created the email campaign sent out to 1000+ student leaders, and collaboratively developed an asset guide so student groups could market PIP in ways that fulfilled event standards and were meaningful to their particular audiences.

During the time the website was open

1,403 users visited the page;There was a total of 2,208&#38;nbsp;sessions; And there was a total of 21,728 page views.

Increased our number of followers from under 200 to 480;Facilitated the use of Instagram Stories and interactive features;Created consistent methods to highlight our five student groups’ work;Strengthened the department’s use of social media management tools.
I also pioneered the department’s verified GIPHY account application and management process. As of June 2021, the GIFs have over 1.8 million views.

Content Creation&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Journalism 📝I have written work for two publications—the Portland State University Vanguard and Technically Functional, the Student Media Tech Team’s blog. &#38;nbsp;
Vanguard
Vanguard is Portland State’s weekly student-run newspaper. I was a contributor to their arts and culture section from January 2020 to June 2021. Two of my favorite pieces I’ve executed are
Hi-C Has Got The Juice; Won the publication’s story of the weekPortland Music Professionals Persevere
Technically Functional
Technically Functional was created as a resource for the Portland State Student Media groups. Along with my other duties as the department's marketing manager, I worked individually and collaboratively on blog posts highlighting new technology, journalism resources, and other relevant topics. Our long term goal was to extend the reach of our posts to people in the greater Portland community. A few of my favorite posts I've written include

		<description>Podcast Editing and Audio Work 🎙

Podcast EditingI’ve acted as a contracted audio editor on four podcasts since June of 2019. The episodes I’ve edited from most to least recent are
Your Own Mind; Episode 1 (Composed the theme song)Archichechure; Episode 4Situational Significance; Episodes 6 to 11Take Some Molly; Episodes 1 to 8 (Composed the theme song)
My clients were dabbling in podcasting and discovering what direction they wanted to take, which means most of these shows are no longer active. I have found a love for working with audio in this way, and I firmly believe that oral storytelling is a powerful, accessible, and educational tool. I developed a blog series on starting a podcast for the Technically Functional blog.&#38;nbsp;

I edit equally in Logic Pro X and Studio One. I also began to expand my workflow to ProTools as I composed for my senior thesis, which was published in June 2021.&#38;nbsp;

Radio Advertisement&#38;nbsp;
In the Spring of 2020, I took a virtual Studio Production class. We explored production techniques we could perform remotely, mainly mixing and mastering. One of our assignments was completing a radio advertisement, including originally composed music, appropriate sound effects, and spatial mixing. My advertisement was for a mock ad for a company from my hometown, Mountian Equip Recyclers. View the script I created for the project on Google Docs and listen to the advertisement on my SoundCloud.

	Music Composition 🎶During my undergraduate degree I developed fluency in two DAWs: Logic and StudioOne. Additionally, I became skilled in both electronic and classical methods of composition. I can notate music, work with MIDI, build Max patches, play multiple&#38;nbsp;instruments and craft music in a variety of genres.
The largest composition project I have completed yet was my senior thesis which you can listen to and read about on my&#38;nbsp;Senior Thesis page.

I have worked on other compositional projects, including a MIDI orchestration completed in Studio One and a handful of songs. Some of my favorites include
Triumphant Return - MIDI OrchestrationAffinity

		<description>She Is The Music 🦋&#38;nbsp;In the Spring of 2020, I was disappointed as the live sound opportunities I was exploring were canceled due to COVID-19. However, She Is The Music, a non-profit headed by Alicia Keys, opened an application for a virtual mentorship program. I was selected as one of 36 young women and non-binary people from over 600 applicants to be paired with a music executive for eight weeks.

From June to August, I met weekly with my mentor, Jacqueline Reynolds-Drumm, a top booking agent at ICM. Together we explored my passions and directions for career development. During the program, I created a plan to “poach” one of my favorite artists, Mereba, from her current agency and presented this at a mock singing meeting with Yves Pierre, Jacqueline's teammate.

In addition to the project, I connected with influential women working in artist relations, management, songwriting, production, and education through program-wide Zoom calls. I also meaningfully expanded my network with the other young women looking to enter the industry.

You can check out my project on Google Drive and&#38;nbsp;meet my fellow mentees on Instagram.

		<description>Senior Thesis 📚 + 💿
During my time at Portland State, I was a part of the Honors College. The curriculum focuses on urban living, academic discourse, and research methods. While in the program, I've had the opportunity to conduct social science research on women attending live music events, explore discourse surrounding Ancient Rome, learn about the oral and artifact based history of African countries, gain insight into Portland's urban ecology, and more.

The honors college provided me with the resources to complete an undergraduate thesis to learn more about sound in an academic context. I started my thesis in the Spring of 2020, and completed it in June 2021 under the direction of Anwyn Willette, the SAMP area coordinator. I collected over 200 field recordings from my environments and through five short compositions explored how the sounds we hear everyday affect our relationships with space and people. &#38;nbsp;
The fives pieces I composed are organized into three recordings, which you can listen to on SoundCloud or the player below. To learn more about the idea of using field recordings as instruments and the frameworks used, you can access the full text and supporting files on PDX Scholar. To hear some of the music my research is inspired by, listen to my playlist on Spotify.
